The story of the secret Internet building in White River Junction: It started off as a 2 story telegraph office with high windows and ceilings in the 1920s. In the 60’s, a massive, 4 story windowless brick structure with thick walls was added to house giant telephone switches, and protect them against cold war fears of nuclear war. After the cold war ended, windows were added to make it more habitable. A few people have told me its mostly empty now, that whatever digital equipment is left hardly takes up any space. Over the past few years, this building and part of the network has changed hands 3 times - from Verizon to Fairpoint and just recently to Consolidated Communications, based in Illinois. Fiber optic cables carrying data run through the town along the railroad tracks, likely on the same paths that the telegraph cables used 100 years ago. The CCS senior studios now occupy the old telegraph office portion of the building, where I worked on my comic about history and geography of the internet for the last few months.
